Local residents, businesses, and community organisations joined forces with Northampton Town Council to win Silver Gilt at East Midlands in Bloom – with research from the Active Quarter also supporting the entry. Nicole Haviland, Community Engagement Officer at Northampton Town Council said:
Led by the Royal Horticultural Society, In Bloom is one of the largest horticultural competitions in Europe – so Northampton’s award is a testament to the hard work and passion shown across the town.
A major part of this success is thanks to the town’s green-fingered volunteers. Their dedication was recognised by the judges, who praised an increase in the number of It’s Your Neighbourhood community gardens – presenting an additional Judges’ Award for this achievement.
Part of East Midlands in Bloom includes It’s Your Neighbourhood (IYN) – a way to get more people involved in community gardening and greening projects. Northampton Town Council actively supports and encourages local groups to take part. Sandra Robinson, from the Bees Be Happy project, plays a key role as a community volunteer liaison, helping to connect groups, share knowledge, and build a supportive network.
Over the past year, 88 groups received grants, with many using them to create or enhance community gardens. 21 of these also took part in the IYN scheme. Once groups are engaged, they become part of a wider community where resources, skills, and ideas are shared. Nicole Added:
Beyond the awards, the community’s hard work has transformed public spaces into greener, more welcoming places – benefiting both people and wildlife. These improvements will help make time outdoors more enjoyable for everyone, supporting a happier, healthier Northampton for years to come.
